Of the 39 leading models we checked, 9 can run with requests processed in Australia on at least one major cloud platform. 18 are reachable from Australian regions only through global routing, and 6 more have open weights you can host yourself. Each answer links to the provider’s documentation.

Claude Opus and Sonnet models have Australia-only “au.” inference profiles that keep requests within Sydney and Melbourne. Newer OpenAI, xAI and Moonshot models on Bedrock are available from Sydney through global routing only.

Which AI models can I use with data kept in Australia?
As of 23 Sep 2026, Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Opus 5, Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Opus 4.7, Claude Opus 4.6, Claude Sonnet 5, Claude Sonnet 4.6, GPT-5.4 and Gemini 3.5 Flash can run with requests processed in Australia on at least one major cloud platform. Open-weights models can also be hosted in an Australian region on your own infrastructure.
Can I use Claude in Australia?
Yes, for Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Opus 5, Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Opus 4.7, Claude Opus 4.6, Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Sonnet 4.6: AWS Bedrock offers Australia-only routing between Sydney and Melbourne, and some also run in-region in Melbourne through Bedrock’s Messages API endpoint. Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Fable 5 are global-only from Australian regions. Anthropic’s own API does not offer an Australian processing location.
Can I use OpenAI’s GPT models with Australian data residency?
Only GPT-5.4 has an in-region option in Azure Australia East, and it needs reserved (provisioned) capacity. Other GPT models are available from Australian regions through global deployments. OpenAI’s own Australian endpoint stores data at rest in Australia, but OpenAI says processing may happen elsewhere.
What’s the difference between “in region”, “Australia routing” and “global”?
In region means requests are processed in that Australian data centre. Australia routing (AWS Bedrock’s “au.” profiles) spreads requests across Sydney and Melbourne but keeps them in Australia. Global means you call the model from an Australian region, but the provider may process the request anywhere it has capacity.
Does keeping data in Australia matter for my business?
It depends on your obligations and your clients. Health, government and financial-services work often has contractual or regulatory requirements about where data is processed; many other businesses simply prefer it. Check your provider’s current terms and your own obligations — this page tracks what the cloud platforms document, not legal advice.
